The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is a front-engine, 2-seat luxury grand tourer automobile developed by Mercedes-AMG to replace the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. The car is the first Mercedes automobile designed in-house by AMG and is described by Mercedes-Benz as a spiritual successor to the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing. Mercedes presented at the 2012 Paris Motor Show an electric version of the car, named Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive.

The vehicle was unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show and sales began in mid-2010 in Europe. and in the United States in mid-2011,

Design

The SLS AMG was designed to be a modern 300SL Gullwing revival by Mark Fetherston in 2007. The car has a long bonnet, the passenger compartment is close to the rear axle and the rear of the car is short. The SLS AMG was developed from late 2006 in tandem with the Dodge Viper, with mules using Viper body panels over an aluminum chassis developed by Dodge SRT. The SLS AMG has also adapted the feature of wing doors that will swing open upwards on gas struts, not in a mix of upwards and forward like the SLR. The doors must be closed manually as AMG engineers decided against auto-closing systems because the systems would have added 90 pounds (41 kg) to the car. In case of a roll-over, the doors can be fully detached to allow the occupants to leave the vehicle.

Although there is some overlapping in price and performance, the lighter SLS AMG is considered more of a sporty track-oriented car, compared to the Mercedes-Benz SL which is a more autobahn-focused grand tourer especially with its optional V12 engine. Compared to the SLS AMG Roadster, the SL is a hardtop convertible with technological and comfort amenities, and it also has available heated and cooled seats with a massage function.

Models

The SLS AMG will be made in at least four different versions. The first to launch is the coupe with gullwing doors. In 2009 a Desert Gold version debuted at the Dubai International Auto Show, in mid-2010 a FIA-GT3 racing version. For 2011–2013 Mercedes will also be releasing a roadster (with conventional doors and a soft top), an electric powered E-Cell version (most likely to be a coupe), and there will be a Black Series version, which will see its weight being reduced by as much as 300 kg (661 lb).

SLS AMG “Blackbird”

The SLS AMG “Blackbird” was a unique, special edition SLS AMG created by Mercedes-Benz’s Australian subsidiary specifically for the 2010 Australian International Motor Show.

SLS AMG Electric Drive

The SLS AMG Electric Drive is an upcoming electric version of the SLS AMG planned for release in June 2013.

History

The idea of an electric SLS AMG was originally introduced publicly as the SLS AMG E-Cell prototype in 2010. That prototype is drivable and is powered by four electric motors that provide a combined 392 kW (526 hp) and 880 N·m (650 lb·ft). The battery is a 400 V lithium battery with a 48 kWh capacity.

Powertrain

The SLS AMG Electric Drive will be powered by four electric motors with combined ratings of 552 kW (740 hp) and 1,000 N·m (740 lb·ft). Each motor can spin up to 13,000 rpm and weighs 45 kg (99 lb). In addition, the transmission allows each motor to selectively drive all 4 wheels. With this, the SLS AMG Electric Drive accelerates from standing still to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds.

Battery

The SLS AMG Electric Drive will include a liquid-cooled 400 V lithium-ion battery rated to 60 kWh. The 548 kg (1,210 lb) battery pack is made up of 12 modules, each comprising 72 lithium-ion cells. The system was designed as a collaboration between Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains Ltd.

SLS AMG Roadster

The SLS AMG Roadster was unveiled by Mercedes-Benz via press release on May 5, 2011. It retains the same specifications, dimensions and drivetrain as the Coupe but is a more traditional convertible with a power folding fabric top and conventional doors. The roadster weighs only 40 kg (88 lb) more than the original SLS AMG coupe, and the top can be raised or lowered up to 31 mph (50 km/h).

The SLS AMG Roadster is described by Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear as being the best car in the world and is a huge fan of the car.

SLS AMG GT

The SLS AMG GT was unveiled on June 5, 2012 via the Internet and was, at release, the most powerful version of the C197, developing 435 kW (583 hp); torque is unchanged. It will be available to purchase as coupe and roadster in October 2012 and replaces the original SLS AMG models. Additionally, the SLS AMG GT receives an updated transmission that promises increased shift speeds. Together with the power increase, the GT is expected to accelerate to 60 mph (97 km/h) 0.1 seconds quicker. The adaptive suspension receives increased stiffness.

The SLS AMG GT also has a slightly revised exterior and interior, including “GT” lettering on the boot lid, sport seats with an embossed AMG badge, and centre tunnel, steering wheel, rooflining, and door centre panels finished in Alcantara.

SLS AMG Black Series

The SLS AMG Black Series is the most sporting version of the SLS. Unveiled on 09 November 2012, the Black Series uses the same 6.2 L V8, this time with 464 kW (622 hp) and 635 N·m (468 lb·ft). The engine’s redline s increased from 7200 to 8000 rpm. This was accomplished by, among other features, higher pressure and revised intake ducting.

The Black Series loses a total of 70 kg (150 lb) compared to the standard model. This is accomplished by increased use of carbon fibre in body panels, mechanical components, and the spaceframe. Further, a switch from steel to titanium for the exhaust reduces weight by 17 kg (37 lb).

The exterior changes to the Black Series are inspired by the SLS GT3. Parts include unique a unique front splitter and rear diffuser, wide fender flares to accommodate wider tires, and a carbon fibre side vent that reduces temperatures in the engine compartment. Unique matte black wheels frame the standard ceramic composite brake discs.
